Season: September 1–30, 2026, in both state and federal Gulf waters. Harvest closes at 12:01 a.m. October 1. Minimum size: 24 inches total length. Daily bag limit: 2 gag per person, counted within the 4-grouper aggregate bag limit (gag, black, red, and other reef fish species combined can't exceed 4 per person per day). Charter captains and crew have a zero-fish bag limit. Gear: Standard reef fish gear rules apply, and fish must be landed with head and fins intact. License requirement: Anyone fishing for gag or other designated reef fish species from a private recreational vessel must be signed up for the State Reef Fish Angler Designation (annual renewal required). FWC says data from that survey is now directly used to manage the Gulf gag grouper season, so it's not just paperwork — it's part of how future seasons get set.
FWC says aligning the state and federal seasons is meant to help keep 2026 landings under the recreational catch target and avoid triggering a quota payback (a shortened season) in 2027 — a reminder that a good season this fall depends partly on how disciplined harvest is across the board.
Worth noting: the Gulf gag season is separate from the Atlantic side, where the 2026 recreational gag season already closed August 2 in both state and federal waters. If you're running out of Monroe County or fishing the Atlantic coast, gag are off the table until next year's season opens.

Gag has had a rough few years — the most recent stock assessment found the Gulf population overfished and still experiencing overfishing, which is part of why FWC and NOAA have kept trimming and adjusting the season length rather than locking in a fixed calendar window.
