Every water/species pair returns one of four states: OPEN (keep it, within the posted limits), RELEASE (catch-and-release only), CLOSED (no harvest right now), or UNKNOWN. UNKNOWN means we don't have a rule we trust enough to answer — it is never a guess dressed up as an answer, and it is never itself evidence that harvest is legal. Where a citation is shown, that's the actual regulation the reading is built from; "pending sign-off" means the rule has been researched but not yet checked by a person against that source.

Creating a free account only needs a name, email, home state, and date of birth — no card, no charge. Verifying your email isn't required to use the free legality reading, but it is required before you can choose a paid plan. We send a verification link on signup; if it expired or didn't arrive, request a new one from your Account page.

On the log-in screen, tap "Forgot password?" and enter your account email. If that address has an account, we'll send a link to set a new password — the link works once and expires after 1 hour. For your security, resetting your password signs you out of every device you were previously signed in on, so you'll need to log in again afterward with the new password.

The legality reading — every water, every species, every state — is free forever. The Angler plan adds catch logging, waypoints, best-hours timing, full source citations, and rule-change alerts. An Angler-plan feature: log a catch (species, size, photo, conditions at the time) or drop a waypoint by tapping the map or using your current location. Each entry has a visibility setting — Private (only you), Community (shown in the feed with species/size/general region, never an exact water or coordinates), or Public.

Upload a photo of your catch and it's checked against real species-recognition, then run through the same legality reading as a manual pick. A weak, ambiguous, or possible-protected-species identification never asserts "keep it" — the fail-safe rule applies here exactly as it does everywhere else in the app.

"Waters near me" on the water picker and "Locate me" on the map both ask your browser for a one-time location reading — nothing is tracked continuously, and nothing is sent anywhere except to sort or mark that one request. "Waters near me" is free for everyone; "Locate me" (plotting your position on the water's map) is part of the Angler plan, alongside saving waypoints. The legality reading itself never depends on either. If location doesn't seem to work, check your browser's site permissions for this page specifically (location access is granted per-site, not app-wide) — on iOS Safari that's under Settings → Safari → the site's permissions, and on Android Chrome it's the lock/info icon next to the address bar → Permissions → Location.

A background check watches the agencies behind our signed rules for changes. A source has to show the same change on two separate checks before anything flips — a single noisy read of a page never triggers an alert. If a signed rule's source changes, that rule drops back to UNKNOWN until a person reviews and re-signs it. Recent findings are public on the Alerts page.
