Gulf Red Snapper Reopens September 1 for the Fall Season
Florida's Gulf red snapper season has been closed for the month of August, but anglers don't have long to wait — the fall season opens September 1 and runs daily through October 4, before shifting to a weekend-only schedule that stretches into January 2027.
What's changing
The 2026 private recreational season for Gulf red snapper in Florida state and federal waters is split into two parts:
Summer season: May 22 – July 31 (open daily) — now closed Fall season: September 1 – October 4 (open daily), then: October 9–11, 16–18, 23–25 (Fri/Sat/Sun) October 30 – November 1 (Fri/Sat/Sun) November 7–8, 14–15, 21–22 (Sat/Sun) November 26–29 (Thanksgiving weekend) December 5–6, 12–13, 19–20 (Sat/Sun) December 25–27 (Christmas weekend) January 1–4, 2027 (open daily) Combined, that's 140 days on the water this year — the longest Gulf red snapper season since Florida took over state management of the fishery, according to FWC.
Note this applies to private recreational anglers and charter boats without a federal reef fish permit fishing in Florida Gulf state and federal waters. Federally permitted for-hire vessels operate on a separate NOAA Fisheries schedule, which runs June 1 through October 26, 2026, for the Gulf for-hire component.
Limits, as a reminder
Minimum size: 16 inches total length Daily bag: 2 fish per person, counted within the 10-fish snapper aggregate bag limit Charter captain and crew: zero bag — they can't keep a personal limit while working Why it matters Red snapper are slow-growing and long-lived — FWC notes they can live past 50 years, and a single 24-inch female produces as many eggs as roughly 212 smaller 17-inch females. That's the reasoning behind the split summer/fall structure and the weekend-only stretch later in the fall: spreading effort out to protect the older, more productive fish in the population while still giving anglers a long season overall.
If you're headed out September 1, expect pressure — reef and wreck spots inside 100 feet tend to get crowded on reopeners. Structure a little further out, or fishing the first hour of daylight, is usually the difference-maker.
