Gulf Red Snapper's Summer Run Closes July 31

If you've got a red snapper trip on the calendar, get it in soon. Florida's 2026 Gulf private recreational red snapper season closes at the end of the day July 31 — that's this Friday — and won't reopen until September 1.

The dates that matter right now

Per FWC's official snapper regulations page, the 2026 Gulf red snapper season for private vessels (and for-hire boats without a federal reef fish permit) runs in two blocks:

Summer season: May 22 – July 31 (open daily)

Fall season: September 1 – October 4 (open daily), followed by a string of three-day and two-day weekends running through January 4, 2027 — including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's blocks That gives Florida a 140-day Gulf red snapper season for 2026, the longest since the state took over Gulf red snapper management — confirmed both on FWC's regulations page and in the Governor's Office release announcing the season back in May.

The rules haven't changed from earlier this year: 16-inch total length minimum, 2 fish per person, counted within the 10-fish snapper aggregate bag limit. Charter captains and crew still can't keep a red snapper for themselves. And if you're fishing from a private vessel in Gulf state or federal waters, you need to be a registered State Reef Fish Angler through GoOutdoorsFlorida.com — that requirement doesn't go away just because the season's closing.

A note on who this applies to

This closure is specifically for private recreational anglers and non-federally-permitted for-hire boats. If you're booked on a boat holding a federal for-hire reef fish permit, that's a separate season entirely — federal waters opened June 1 and run through October 26, a 147-day window set independently by NOAA Fisheries. Worth confirming with your captain which season your trip falls under before you assume the July 31 close applies to you.

Don't mix this up with the Atlantic situation

If you've seen headlines about a federal court pausing Florida's Atlantic red snapper season back in May, that's a separate fishery and doesn't touch the Gulf closure described here. FWC has been explicit that the Atlantic ruling only affects Atlantic federal waters — Gulf red snapper regulations and this closing date are unaffected.

Bottom line

Four days left in the summer block. After July 31, red snapper goes back in the box until September 1, when it reopens daily through October 4 before shifting to the weekend/holiday schedule for the rest of the year. Plan accordingly, and double-check your State Reef Fish Angler registration is current before you head out.
