Understanding Walleye
Walleye behave like no other popular gamefish in North America, and the reason comes down to one piece of anatomy: the eye. A walleye's eye has a layer of reflective tissue called the tapetum lucidum — the same structure that makes a cat's eyes glow in headlights — which lets it see far better than its prey in low light and murky water. Why walleye "turn on" at dawn, dusk, and after dark
Because walleye out-see their prey in dim conditions, they do most of their aggressive feeding in low light. The Minnesota DNR notes that walleye typically feed in shallow water at dawn and dusk, and remain more active through the day when wave chop, clouds, or turbid water cut down on brightness.
